Careers Education Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Statement 2023-24 

Introduction

Penkridge Middle School is committed to providing careers education, information, advice and guidance to all our KS3 students through the curriculum and a broad range of organised activities. 

Aims  

Penkridge Middle School careers programme aims to: 

  • Encourage students to be ambitious, broaden their horizons and explore their own career aspirations during the time they spend with us in KS3. 
  • Enable students to make informed decisions about their future career pathways 
  • Ensure students’ readiness to take their next step in their learning or careers in their next school transition. 

Penkridge Middle School follows the 8 principles of the Gatsby Benchmarks. These are principles that underly good career guidance. 

  1. A stable careers programme. 
  2. Learning from career and labour market information. 
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil. 
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers. 
  5. Encounters with employers and employees. 
  6. Experiences of workplaces. 
  7. Encounters with further and higher education. 
  8. Personal guidance. 

Objectives

  • Helping students to understand the changing world of work 
  • Facilitating meaningful encounters with employers for all students in Y7 and Y8 
  • Enabling students to develop the research skills to find out about opportunities 
  • Helping students to identify and develop the skills, attitudes and qualities to make a successful transition into the world of work 
  • Encouraging participation in a student leader programme 
  • Supporting inclusion, challenging stereotyping and promoting equality of opportunity 
  • Contributing to strategies for raising achievement, particularly by increasing motivation 
  • Help students link their curriculum to career pathways and labour market information. 

Student entitlement

All KS3 students are entitled to be fully involved in an effective CEIAG programme. Students are encouraged to take an active role in their own career development, so the careers programme emphasises student participation with a focus on self-awareness and self-development, learning about careers and the world of work and developing career management and employability skills. This can be through the channels of PSHE and utilising the careers platform ‘Start’. 

The careers online platform; ‘Start’, can be accessed by students and parents and is a tool that can support the aims and objectives outlined in this statement. The ‘Start’ programme is embedded into the high school’s curriculum where a large proportion of our pupils will move to. This allows a familiar transition for students in supporting their career aspirations.
